[VMware VCF] Use the SoS utility to check the operational status of the VCF environment and to collect log information from components.

Popularity:753 ℃/2024-10-04 18:29:13

One of the VMware Cloud Foundation solutions is called Supportability and Serviceability.SoS) is a supportability and maintainability utility that you may have used during the initial build of a VCF management domain, when you used this tool to convert the Excel parameter table for the deployed VCF management domain into a JSON-formatted parameter file in a VMware Cloud Builder virtual machine, as described in "VMware Cloud Foundation Part 03: Preparing the Excel Parameter Sheet.". Similarly, this SoS program can be used in SDDC Manager VMs and has more useful features such as running status checks in VCF environments and collecting logs from related components, so let's see how to use it.

I. Options for using the SoS utility

To connect to the SDDC Manager VM via SSH, the SoS Utility can be found at the location shown below (/opt/vmware/sddc-support) and you can use the--version maybe-v command option to view the current version of the SoS utility. Note that using the SoS program may require the root user to run when performing certain functional options.

sudo ./sos --version

utilization--help maybe-h command to viewSoS program usage optionsHelp.

IV. Checking the operational status of the VCF environment

The SoS utility can be used to check the operational status of various components or services in a VCF environment, including the state of the connection configuration, the compute and storage state, and the network configuration state in the workload domain. Use the--health-check option to check all the states in the VCF environment at once, use the--json-output-dir option outputs the results of the check in JSON format to a specified directory.

Note: If the result of the check item is GREEN, it means the health status of the item is NORMAL; if the result of the check item is YELLOW, it means the health status of the item is WARNING; if the result of the check item is RED, it means the health status of the item is CRITICAL.

utilization--get-inventory-info option obtains "inventory" information about the relevant components in the specified workload domain.

V. Collecting logs of VCF-related components

The SoS utility can be used toCollecting logs from related components in the VCF environmentinformation, including deployed ESXi, vCenter Server, NSX Manager, and SDDC Manager. These logs can be used to troubleshoot issues related to VCF or provided to VMware technical support to assist you in resolving issues.

Component-specific log collection can be performed by specifying component-specific options if you run the SoS utility (such as thesudo ./sos ) without specifying any component-specific options, the SoS tool collects SDDC Manager, API andVMware Cloud Foundation Summary Log. A summary log can be created using the--collect-all-logs option to collect log information from all components, although this can take a long time.SoS log collection may time out after 60 minutes. If the SoS utility times out, use specific options to collect component-specific logs or limit log collection to a specific cluster.

Note: By default, the SoS utility stores the output logs in theSDDC Manager hit the nail on the head/var/log/vmware/vcf/sddc-support directory, if you need to output to a specific directory, you can use the--logs-dir Options. The utility deletes any previously run output files that may be present before saving the output log to the relevant directory; to keep older output files, use the--no-clean-old-logs option, or use the--logs-folder option sets a new output directory name

utilization--sddc-manager-logs option collects log information from SDDC Manager components.
