Today's post is lighthearted and non-brainstorming, mainly because I want to share with you a remote management tool that I commonly use at work - theMobaXtermMobaXterm. This tool is not only powerful, but also extremely efficient in daily remote operations, especially for managing remote servers.MobaXterm combines a wide range of network tools, supports protocols such as SSH, X11, RDP, etc., and is able to connect to different remote systems through a graphical interface, as well as local terminal commands, which makes it a great assistant for handling tasks in complex network environments. This makes it a powerful assistant for tasks in complex network environments.
Next, we'll look at how you can use MobaXterm to boost your productivity.
MobaXterm
First of all, many people may ask why I didn't choose the very popular Xshell in the first place. After all, Xshell is the tool I've been using since I graduated, and it's quite versatile, with a large user base and very familiar operation. So why did I choose MobaXterm? The reason is actually quite simple - Xshell is a paid tool, and its commercial version requires additional licensing fees, which is not appropriate for the company. In order to avoid potential copyright issues, the company explicitly forbids the use of Xshell, so I spent some time looking for a tool that would fulfill my work needs without copyright issues, and eventually found MobaXterm.
MobaXterm is not only completely free, but also, MobaXterm integrates a variety of commonly used tools, such as file transfer, SSH session management, etc., which can solve multiple needs in a single software, avoiding the trouble of switching between multiple tools.
As you can see, MobaXterm's interface is simple and intuitive, with a clear modularity of functions that makes it both efficient and easy to use.
Monitoring and File Transfer
He provides a variety of visualization components, which greatly facilitates the user's operation. For example, without having to download Xftp separately, you can access the server's directory files directly through the interface, which is exactly the same as copying and pasting local folders, simple and intuitive. In addition, there is a real-time updated visual monitoring function, users can view the current server memory usage in real time, monitoring interface at a glance, as shown in the figure below:
Command Recording
If you click on the "Follow terminal folder" option in the lower left corner, the directory tree on the left will be automatically synchronized whenever you jump to a directory in the terminal, which is unmatched by XShell. In addition to this, a very useful feature that I use a lot is the command snapshot logging. You might say that XShell has similar shortcut buttons, but MobaXterm supports recording commands, as shown below, which makes the workflow much more efficient and convenient.
Compatible with Linux commands to operate Windows
In addition to this, MobaXterm offers a very useful feature that allows you to operate Windows PowerShell (Administrator Mode) directly from Windows 11. With this feature, you can not only run command lines directly from PowerShell, but these commands are compatible with Linux commands. In other words, you don't have to learn and memorize complicated Windows-specific commands to work as efficiently as you do in Linux.
multi-window operation
Next, MobaXterm has another very useful feature - multiple windows operating at the same time. This is a common and essential feature for me, because in our daily work, we usually need to manage multiple servers at the same time. As you can see in the picture below:
local server
Sometimes we may need to use our local machine as a server for testing or development. So how does it work? Actually, it provides several protocols to support different needs. Here, we first choose the most common HTTP protocol to try and see how it works.
These are all features that I use regularly in my daily work and can greatly improve operational efficiency. If you are ever in a situation where you can't use XShell, consider trying this tool. It is similar to XShell in terms of functionality, and even more flexible and convenient in some aspects. I have used it many times to verify that it is indeed a highly recommended tool to help you successfully complete a variety of server management and remote operation tasks.
